We were sent a variety of cat dolls made by Nakayukawa clay dolls in Fukushima Prefecture.
They are all colorful and just looking at them makes you feel happy and cheerful.

右手を上げている招き猫はお金、左手を上げている招き猫はお客様、黒い子は魔除け、金色または黄色の子は金運、白い子は福を招くと言われています。

ずっと行きたいと思っていたのですがなかなか行けず、今週月曜日に世田谷ボロ市に行った帰りに寄ってみました。
幕末の大老井伊直弼の墓所で、仏殿や法堂、三重塔もある立派なお寺さんです。
広い敷地の中の招福殿に招き猫の奉納所があり、海外からの観光客の方でいっぱいです。
When it comes to beckoning cats in Tokyo, there's Gotokuji Temple.
I'd been wanting to go for a long time but never got around to it, so on Monday this week I decided to drop in on my way back from the Setagaya Boroichi market.
It is the gravesite of Ii Naosuke, the chief advisor of the late Edo period, and is a magnificent temple with a Buddha hall, lecture hall and three-story pagoda.
There is a place to offer beckoning cats in the Shofukuden hall on its spacious grounds, and it is always full of tourists from overseas.
ある日、この地を通りかかった鷹狩り帰りの殿様が、お寺の門前にいた猫に手招きされ、立ち寄ることに。寺で過ごしていると、突然雷が鳴り雨が降りはじめました。
雷雨を避けられた上に、和尚との話も楽しめた殿様は、その幸運にいたく感動したそうです。
それが彦根藩主の井伊直孝でした。
豪德寺は、直孝に支援され、寛永10年（1633年）に再興しました。

その後、豪德寺では、福を招いた猫を「招福猫児（まねきねこ）」と呼び、
お祀りする招福殿が建てられました。堂内には招福観音菩薩立像が安置されています。

One day, a lord passing through the area on his way back from falconry was beckoned by a cat in front of the temple gate, and decided to stop by. While he was at the temple, suddenly thunder rumbled and rain began to fall.
Not only was the lord able to avoid the thunderstorm, but he also enjoyed a conversation with the monk, and was deeply moved by his good fortune.
This person was Ii Naotaka, the lord of Hikone Domain.
With Naotaka's support, Gotokuji Temple was rebuilt in 1633 (Kan'ei 10).
Later, at Gotokuji Temple, the cat that brought good fortune was called a "Maneki Neko" (beckoning cat),
and a hall called Shofukuden (fortune hall) was built to enshrine it. A standing statue of the Kannon Bodhisattva of Mercy is enshrined inside the hall.

福そのものを与えてくれるわけではありません。
人との大切な「縁」を生かせるかどうかは、その人次第。
報恩感謝の気持ちがあれば、自然とその人のもとに福が訪れるという教えから、小判を持たず、右手だけをあげています。

It is up to each individual to make the most of the important "connections" they have with others.
The teaching behind the Maneki-fuku cat is that if you have a feeling of gratitude and repaying kindness, good fortune will naturally come to you, so it is not holding any gold coins and is only raising its right paw.
